Relevant Volunteer Work

Shepherd's Clinic provides health care to the uninsured population of Baltimore. All patients fall under 200% of the federal poverty line. I initially worked with Shepherd's Clinic as part of the Baltimore Community Practicum class at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. As part of my initial approximately 100 hour practicum, I was able to:
  • Produce nutrition handouts for diabetes and pre-diabetes alone, and in combination with other chronic illnesses
  • Provide cooking demonstrations to patients at Shepherd's Clinic seeking information about the health insurance exchange
  • Provide nutrition counseling for pre-diabetic and diabetic clients at the Joy Wellness Center
I continue to volunteer at Shepherd's Clinic to provide nutrition counseling at the Joy Wellness Center. I primarily counsel diabetic patients, but have also worked with sufferers of renal disease, high blood pressure and GI disorders.

Camp Possibilities is a week-long sleep away camp for children with type 1 diabetes. It has traditional camp activities, such as a talent show, arts & crafts, tie-dye and capture the flag, but it special because it offers support for diabetes management from a team of pediatric endocrinologists,  and certified diabetes educators.

In the summer of 2012, I volunteered to be part of the nutrition team which involved:

  • recipe analysis
  • carbohydrate counting
  • preparing diabetes-friendly snacks
  • participating in glucose testing at the pool and other activities

In 2013, I had earned my dietetics license and was able to take a more active role on the nutrition team:

  • shopping for and preparing allergy-friendly and gluten-free snacks
  • developing fun, age-appropriate nutrition-related games
  • mentoring college dietetics students

Diabetes Destiny  is a Camp for children with type 1 diabetes. This weekend long program is held at North Bay Adventure Camp and is meant to teach the campers that they can be active and still be safe and healthy. Many of the adult counselors had diabetes themselves and served as role models for the campers. There was also a large medical staff presence made up of an endocrinologist, a dietitian and several nurses.

How did I contribute in Spring of 2013 & 2014?

As the team dietitian, I was responsible for providing carbohydrate counts for snacks and mealtimes. I made sure the camp provided meal choices for children with food allergies, multiple food intolerances and Celiac disease. I helped with glucose testing during camp activities, and nightly insulin dosing using insulin pumps and pens

Food & Friends is a meal delivery service for people in the DC  metropolitan area with AIDS, cancer or other life-challenging illnesses that are receiving hospice care, have compromised nutritional status or are unable to prepare their own meals.

Food & Friends also has a comprehensive nutrition program in which community Dietitians provide nutritional assessment, support and education.

How did I contribute to the organization?

I revised nutrition education handouts on topics such as food safety, high calorie diets and diabetes care for content and organization

I called clients who had stopped receiving the service because of loss of communication and tried to re-connect them with resources

I taught the nutrition portion of an 8-week Share our Strength Cooking Matters class for Families. Responsibilities included:

Adapted Cooking Matter's lesson plans to cater to the HIV/AIDS population, and generated appropriate handouts

Used knowledge of generational differences to adapt activities to appeal to children as well as adults
